About IV Sedation Dentistry
At Plymouth Dental Group, we understand that many individuals have fear, anxiety, and phobias surrounding dental care. To help patients enjoy more positive, stress-free dental experiences, general dentist Dr. E. Morgan Scheiber is pleased to offer intravenous (IV) sedation. This conscious sedation dentistry option, also known as "twilight sedation," utilizes a fast-acting anti-anxiety medication, administered intravenously, to keep you relaxed and calm during dental procedures. Though you technically remain awake during the procedure, the comfort and short-term memory loss can make you feel as though you have been asleep. To find out more about IV sedation, please contact our office today. Our practice is a pioneer in sedation dentistry for the Plymouth, Kingston, and South Shore, MA communities.
Ideal Candidates for IV Sedation
The best candidates for IV sedation may be those who experience higher levels of dental anxiety, distress, or fear when undergoing a thorough dental treatment. IV sedation may be appropriate for children, teens, and adults who have deep-seated fear due to previous traumatic experiences at the dentist, behavioral concerns, complex treatment needs, or other factors. Before undergoing IV sedation, Dr. Scheiber will talk with you about the various sedation options our practice provides. He can also adjust the level of medication depending upon your needs and to ensure your comfort and safety.
What To Expect During treatment
To receive intravenous sedation, a small needle will be inserted inside a vein and the medication will be administered. You will start to notice the effects in a very short time, usually within seconds. Dr. Scheiber will perform your dental treatment while monitoring the IV levels and your vitals throughout the entire time. After the procedure is finished, the IV will be removed and you will begin to feel a short time later. While you remain conscious sedation during IV sedation, and able to respond to instructions, you will likely feel as though you slept through the visit and will have little-to-no recollection of the procedure.
Recovery Following your visit
We recommend that you avoid operating a vehicle for a period of 24 hours following IV sedation. You will need to arrange for someone to escort take you home and stay with you for a few hours after your visit. Since it is normal to feel drowsy and lethargic for the rest of the day, we suggest that you drink a lot of water to stay hydrated and rest when possible. In some cases, you might become nauseous or encounter temporary memory loss. These side effects will generally fade away within a day. If you notice any abnormalities or if your symptoms persist, please contact our office right away.
Does insurance cover IV Sedation?
Intravenous sedation may or may not be covered in part by your dental insurance provider. Prior to approving IV sedation dentistry services, our billing team will get in touch with your insurance company to determine any extra out-of-pocket costs. Plymouth Dental Group also offers flexible financing and payment options to make treatment more convenient for our patients.
